Being a massage therapist is such a rewarding career as you positively impact the lives of the people. Like any other career, however, a massage therapist has some disadvantages some of which include:

• Working for long hours while standing: A massage therapist will have to endure standing for long hours as he works hard to make his clients feel better. At times when the work is too much, a massage therapist may not even have time to take breaks between appointments making him very tired.
• The pay is unreliable: As a massage therapist, there are times when there will be no clients to massage and if your pay is calculated on the number of clients you attend to or you are self-employed, your earnings may be very low at these times. This could be quite discouraging especially when you have some bills pending.
• You have to be quite disciplined as a massage therapist especially when you are self-employed. You can choose to miss an appointment or keep it, choose to dedicate yourself to quality massage services or offer services that are below standard and end up losing your customers. Your career will depend on the choices you make, whether good or bad.
• Some clients come to the spa with unrealistic expectations about issues they want the massage to help them in overcoming them. When this does not happen, a client might think that the massage therapist does not know how to offer massage professionally. They may even go to an extent of spreading negative publicity concerning the massage therapist which may lead to loss of more customers.

As a massage therapist, people expect you to work like a miracle worker and help them in getting rid of any complication in their bodies. You have to be strong-willed to overcome such challenges and get on with your profession.
