Home teeth whitening is where you will buy whitening products such as whitening strips, trays, or even a whitening toothpaste and use it at home in an effort to make the teeth whiter. Professional teeth whitening, on the other hand, is when you go to a dentist to have the teeth whitening procedure carried out in his office.
The following are the major differences and similarities between the two methods:
- For home treatment. You conduct the treatment on yourself without supervision while professional teeth whitening is carried out by a dentist.
- Professional teeth whitening will begin to show major changes in the teeth appearance one hour after the process is started. For home teeth whitening, the difference will only be visible after a few weeks, or days depending on the method being used.
- Home teeth whitening methods only work on the front teeth, leaving the back teeth in their original state especially if the teeth are capped.
- The products used in professional teeth whitening contains more hydrogen peroxide making them more effective, unlike the products used at home which only contains a little percentage of the whitening agent, making them less effective.
- It will be possible to maintain the whitening that is as a result of home whitening than that which is attained via professional whitening method. This is because the products at home will be used continuously and will keep the teeth sparkling but for office whitening, the method will be carried out only once and then you get back to your normal routine.
- Professional teeth whitening leads to teeth sensitivity after completion of the process and you will be forced to keep using a sensitivity toothpaste which is quite expensive. Home whitening, on the other hand, will not lead to teeth sensitivity as the concentration of the whitening agents is very low.
