A pregnant Woman is carrying the life of another human being who is in the stages of development and, therefore, very sensitive. There is a high probability of the oils penetrating through the skin and affecting the unborn child and you should be very cautious when carrying out the massage on her. Below are precautions that should act as a guide when conducting the massage:
A pregnant woman should only be massaged by a professional in a spa who will be able to know what oils to use and the safe level of concentration to use during the massage. Some essential oils have synthetic ingredients and these could make some pregnancy symptoms worse. Such symptoms are a headache and lack of sleep which will make the woman restless and this too will affect her unborn child.

Below are precautions that should act as a guide when conducting the massage:
- Do not use essential oils daily on a pregnant woman; a massage using oils should be carried out at least twice every week and not more than this.
- Do not use an undiluted form of essential oils on a pregnant woman; always make it dilute when applying it on her skin to reduce the effect it will have on her unborn child.
- Avoid the use of essential plant oils as they could affect the blood; some plant oils are known to have abortive effects on a pregnant woman and they could lead to the loss of her unborn child.
- When massaging a pregnant woman in her first trimester, avoid the use of essential oils completely as the chances of making her lose the pregnancy as a result of the oils are very high. If possible, massaging of a pregnant woman should begin during the second trimester and proceed to the third trimester.
