Restrictions of a Facial Massage
Massaging the face will be beneficial in stress relief, pain relief, boosting the immune system, among others. There are a few restrictions when carrying out a facial massage that should be considered before carrying out the massage:
- Infectious diseases in the face: A herpes cold sore on the face, ringworms, or shingles is some of the conditions that would hinder the massage therapist from carrying out the massage. Most of these conditions are infectious and if the massage is carried out, the massage may be spread from one part of the body to the other or even from the client to the massage therapist. The best option in this condition will be to postpone the massage until the infection is cleared.
- Sunburn: If the massage is carried out on a sunburned skin, the condition will get worse as the possibility of causing a bruise or a tear is very high. As a professional massage therapist, you should advise the client to take care of the sunburned skin until it is completely healed and then carry out the massage.
- Eczema: Eczema is a skin condition that will be characterized by an itchy, swollen, or irritated skin. If the facial skin is massaged in this condition, it will cause the opening of the damaged skin and this may lead to infections. A professional massage therapist should know when the condition is right to carry out the massage on a skin that is susceptible to an eczema outbreak.
- Other health considerations: Before carrying out the massage, there should be a consultation period where the client should discuss any health concern that may hinder the massage. A client who is not in the right state of health should wait until the condition is improved so that he can proceed with the massage.
