Massage and Viral Skin Infections
As a massage therapist, you may come across various skin conditions in the course of carrying out the massage. Some of these conditions are caused by a virus and range from moderate to severe. It is not just the client who may get a viral infection; the massage therapist could also be suffering from a viral infection. If this is the case, he should ensure that he is wearing gloves throughout the massage session so that he will not put the clients at risk of contracting the viral infection.
No client will be comfortable if the massage therapist who is carrying out the massage has viral infections and is not doing anything to protect him from contracting the virus. To avoid such scenarios, you should ensure that you wear non-latex gloves and also ensure that the hands are sanitized before and after the massage.
If a client has cold sores, you should avoid massaging the areas that have the sores as they are highly contagious. Alternatively, he can carry out a massage through a drape which will cover the affected part of the body. You should also ensure that you do not touch any part of your body when carrying out the massage.
The linens that the client will be using during the massage should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected so that the next patient who will lie on the sheets will not develop a viral infection.
For chicken pox, the massage therapist should reschedule the massage until the client is completely healed as this is a highly contagious skin condition.
If you notice that the client has shingles, you should wear protective gear like gloves and ensure that you keep away from the areas that have the shingles. You should also ensure that you disinfect the linens that were being used during the massage as a person who has not had chickenpox could easily contract shingles.
You should ensure that you change the linens after every massage to avoid the spread of viral infections from one person to the other. The linens should be disinfected to ensure that every virus is gotten rid of so that no client will ever complain of contracting an infection as a result of having massage therapy in your spa.
