When an expectant mother comes to you for massage, the following are the essential oils that you should avoid as their use could result in devastating effects:
- Bitter almond oil: This oil is known to cause birth defects and should, therefore be avoided if the client you are massaging is carrying a child in her womb.
- Camphor oil: Camphor oil has such a strong smell and is also used as a stimulant. Using it on an expectant woman will lead to the breakdown of red blood cells and should be avoided at all costs.
- Basil essential oil: The use of basil essential oil can lead to irritation of the skin and you should avoid using it on a pregnant woman.
- Aniseed essential oil: this oil contains anthills which will raise the level of estrogen which is not healthy for expectant mothers.
- Chamomile essential oil: This oil is known to increase the menstrual flow and its use could result in unwanted abortion. Do not use it for massaging a pregnant woman.
- Cinnamon oil: The use of cinnamon oil could damage the liver or the kidney of an unborn child. It could also lead to preterm labor as it works towards stimulating menstrual flow which may make the baby come out prematurely.
- Cloves essential oil: Cloves essential oil: clove oil can lead to premature contraction of the uterus which could lead to preterm labor. It could also lead to clotting of blood or lead to excess bleeding during childbirth.
- Wintergreen essential oil: this oil contains methyl silicate which could lead to abnormal grown of the fetus. The baby could be born with serious deformities and you should, therefore, avoid such oils.
