In case one of your clients becomes disabled either mentally, emotionally, physically, or gets into any other form of disability, these are the changes you need to make in order to accommodate his special needs:
- Accommodate: A person who is going through a disability phase needs a person who will be able to accept him as he is and not someone who will look at him with pity. You should offer the massage having in mind the limitations he is currently under and works towards making his condition improve.
- Communicate: If a client is unable to speak as a result of the disability, you should make an effort to understand what he says using signs. You must ensure that the client is able to express her views and tailor the massage session to be as comfortable as possible.
- If a client is unable to walk or walks with difficulty, you should make an effort to have the massage at a place he is most comfortable in even if it means having the massage at his house. You should be able to listen to him and tailor the massage towards helping him recover much faster.
- If a client is walking using crutches or a wheelchair, you should be willing to help him get to the massage room and onto the massage bed. The massage table should be positioned in such a way that the client will be comfortable throughout the massage.
- If the client is paralyzed, you should focus on the part of the body that are still active so that you help him to get relieved from the tension that has build up in the muscles. When touching the areas where the sensory organs are no longer active, you should be very gentle to avoid hurting the client since he is in no condition to tell you when you use excess pressure.
