Swedish massage is regarded as the best-known modality when it comes to massage. The popularity of this massage has grown over the years as people began to notice the overall benefits it can give. But where does Swedish massage came from? How is it done? What are the health benefits it can give?
History of Swedish massage
Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839), a Swedish physiologist, developed “Medical Gymnastics” which include movements performed by a therapist but Johan Georg Mezger (1838-1909), a Dutch practitioner, is the man who adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes in Swedish massage. These are effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (striking), and frictions (rubbing). During 1858, “Medical Gymnastics” became known as “Swedish Movements” in Europe and the “Swedish Movement Cure’ in U.S. So, Per Henrik Ling is credited for the “Swedish Massage System”.
How is it done?
Before the massage, the therapist should ask or you should inform him or her about any injuries or other health conditions that must be known. Generally, you have to be nude during a Swedish massage with your body underneath a sheet or towel. The therapist uncovers only the part of body being worked on. If nudity gets you uncomfortable, you can keep your underwear on. You really need to show off majority of your skin. You don’t have to be shy, bear in mind that Therapists are very professional. Then, you lay face down with your head in a u-shaped face cradle to support your spine. The therapist starts with your back by lubricating your skin with massage oils. Using various techniques that include kneading, effleurage, friction, stretching and tapping, the therapist began to massage your back. A Swedish massage can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on the therapist’s personal style and what he or she is trying to achieve. You may also request how you would like it to be done. When the therapist is finished massaging your back, he or she would now focus on your legs. The therapist will then massage your calves and slide all the way back to your ankles. He or she would also massage your thigh area to stimulate the different muscles in the upper leg. The therapist will also work on your arms. Using his or her thumb, the therapist will then press and make circles around the wrist bones and move your arms up and down. The therapist would also do gentle strokes around the inside of your wrist. The therapist would also massage the top of your hands, especially on the areas between the bones, towards your knuckles. The therapist would also massage your neck gently using their fingertips.
