OILS USED IN MASSAGE THERAPY
It is a well-known fact that the skills of the masseuse are the key to a good massage. The benefits and effects are mainly dependant on the pressure and rubbing movements made over the body parts. However, very few people know that the choice of massage oil is also equally important to get a good massage. It varies according to the skin requirements and the target of the massage therapy.
For sensitive skin which is easily prone to reactions and inflammation, apricot oil is preferred. It is very gentle and lightweight and does not leave the skin greasy after the massage. It is also rich in vitamin A and vitamin E. It is the preferred alternative to heavy oils as it provides the same effect but with little side effects.
Some of the more substantial oils used in massages are olive oil and coconut oil. They are very popular for their nourishing properties. They have an odor associated with them and may not be preferred by many people. Shea butter also gives a heavy and greasy feel to the skin but is also very nourishing at the same time.
Another lightweight oil used is sweet almond oil. The best part of this oil is that it is hypoallergenic and causes no skin irritation. As the name suggests, it is extracted from almonds which are a very well-known source of vitamin E and essential fatty acids good for skin. It is very lightweight and gets absorbed into the skin quickly.
For added benefits, some aroma oils may also be added to the massage oils. These include lavender, rosemary etc. Essential oils are concentrated oils hence only a few drops are sufficient to provide the desired effect. They enhance the properties of regular massage oils mentioned above.
